IACHR Calls Interested Organizations to Participate in Two Hearings

Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR or Commission), in accordance with Article 61 of its Rules of Procedures, decided to convene interested organizations to participate in two hearings: one on the misuse of criminal law to criminalize human rights defenders; and the other on economic, social and cultural rights in the Americas.

The hearings will take place during the 153rd Period of Sessions, which will be held from October 23 to November 7, 2014, at the headquarters of the Commission in Washington, DC. The hearings will be held on October 27, 28, 30 and 31.

For this purpose, today the Commission will receive applications of those interested in participate in these hearings, convened at the initiative of the Commission. All applications must be made through the automated digital system created by the IACHR to receive applications. Requests for participation sent by other means will not be accepted. The system is now open through September 29, inclusive. In accordance with Article 66 of the Rules of the Commission, the applicant shall provide a document with a summary of their objectives and of their proposed presentation for the hearings.

This system is the only means to submit such applications and is available in the four official languages ​​of the OAS:

Starting October 2, the Commission will notify the organizations invited to take part in these hearings, informing as to the date and time in which each hearing will take place. The IACHR will not cover any expenses related to the participation in these hearings.

Those organization and individuals that are not invited to the hearing can submit written documents and information deemed relevant in relation to the subject of the hearings.
