Washinton, D.C. -The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Central America, South America, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico agreed on joint actions, during a working meeting held as part of the 159th session of the IACHR in Panama.

Reaffirming the importance of strengthening coordination and cooperation between both bodies in a context in which defending human rights in the region carries serious risks, the IACHR and the OHCHR offices made a commitment to develop a joint mechanism for the promotion and protection of human rights defenders and journalists, in conjunction with the thematic rapporteurs in the regional and the United Nations human rights systems.

With the aim of promoting strategic actions in the framework of the joint declaration on collaboration signed by both entities in 2014, and in the process of development of the IACHR’s 2017-2020 Strategic Plan, the international bodies decided to increase the exchange of information and strengthen the follow-up of both bodies’ recommendations, among other steps.
