IACHR Pleased with Award Nominations for its Document Management System
March 1, 2011
Washington, D.C. — The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is pleased with two award nominations received by its Document Management System, an information technology system set up by the Department of Information and Technology Services of the Organization of American States (OAS).
The IACHR Document Management System (DMS) digitally manages correspondence and documents related to petitions, cases, and precautionary measures. With financial support from Spain, the Department of Information and Technology Services and the IACHR worked together to create this system, which entered into operation in April 2010. The DMS makes it possible to digitally manage all documents related to the Commission's system of petitions and cases—including correspondence with petitioners, the States, and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights—and to sign the letters electronically. The DMS also provides the foundation for a secure digital portal, currently under construction, where petitioners and States will be able to view the status of their petitions, cases, and requests; send additional information to the IACHR; and receive correspondence from the Commission electronically.
The DMS was chosen as a finalist for the 2011 Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Award in the category of medium-sized organizations. The competition is organized by the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM), a nonprofit organization in the U.S. information management sector. AIIM will announce the winner among the three finalists in this category on March 22, 2011.
The IACHR Document Management System was also nominated as a finalist for the 2011 Excellence.gov Awards given by the American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC), a public-private nonprofit whose mission is to advance the business of government through the use of information technology. The DMS was nominated this year, along with two other organizations, in the category of intergovernmental collaboration. The winner will be announced on March 16, 2011.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this matter. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in a personal capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
