Washington, D.C. — The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) invites civil society organizations to take part in the public hearing requested by Peru and in the thematic meetings that will be held as part of the 183rd Period of Sessions, which will take place in a hybrid format (online and in-person) between March 7 and 18, 2022.
The public hearing requested by the State of Peru, "The Situation of Public Policies on Business and Human Rights in Peru," will be held on Tuesday, March 15, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Organizations wishing to take part in this hearing must sign up through this system by completing the online application form by February 28, 2022 at 5:30 PM (EST). As per to Article 66 of the IACHR Rules of Procedure, those requesting to take part must provide proof of identity and justify the grounds for their doing so.
The IACHR will announce the list of organizations that are invited to take part in the hearing in due course. It also invites organizations and people who are not included in this list to put forward any documentation and information they consider relevant to the hearing in writing.
Given the priority areas of the IACHR's 2017–2021 strategic plan and its monitoring mandate, the IACHR decided to hold two meetings with civil society simultaneously: "The Human Rights Situation in the Caribbean" and "The Situation of Democratic Institutions and Judicial Independence in the Americas."
These meetings will be held on March 9, 2022, between 4:00 and 5:30 pm (EST), using secure online platforms that will be announced in due course. Organizations that are interested in taking part in these meetings can sign up through February 28, 2022, at 11:59 PM (EST) using one of these forms (Spanish or English)
The organizations that are chosen to participate in these meetings will be sent the meeting link and other relevant information to the e-mail address that they provide. Anyone requiring Spanish to English or English to Spanish interpretation services should indicate this on the sign-up form. These meetings will be recorded for various internal purposes.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
