Objective: to share among the representatives of the respective mechanisms, information on the following points: a) procedural and substantive developments regarding the promotion and protection of people's human rights; b) involvement of the organizations that work on this issue in the activities of the respective mechanisms; c) substantive topics related to the topic; d) situation of groups in situations of particular vulnerability, such as women and children with disabilities, and e) steps to be followed in advancing the promotion and protection of the rights of people living with this condition.

United Kingdom: Experts Meeting "Persons with Disabilities and the Right to Freedom of Expression and Information"

London, June 18 and 19, 2014

On June 18 and 19, members of the IACHR's Disability Group participated in an experts meeting in London on Persons with Disabilities and the Right to Freedom of Expression and Information, convened by the organization Article 19. The event brought together a group of experts on human rights and disabilities to discuss implementation of state obligations regarding the right of persons with disabilities to freedom of expression, opinion, and information. This meeting drew participants from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); Harvard University; and civil society organizations from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.



2013

Chile: Meeting of specialists to define strategic priorities for the regional agenda on the situation of people with disabilities in ECLAC

Santiago de Chile, May 14-15

Between May 14 and 15, 2013, a “Meeting of Specialists to Define Strategic Priorities of the Regional Agenda on the Situation of Persons with Disabilities” was held at ECLAC Headquarters, in Santiago, Chile, at which Commissioner Rose-Marie Belle Antoine was invited. The Commissioner participated in Panel 2: Effective exercise of the rights of persons with disabilities, who made a presentation on the "Cases of human rights violations due to disability, presented before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights."

Commissioner Rose-Marie Antoine met in Santiago de Chile with Lorena Fríes Monleón, Director of the National Institute of Human Rights of Chile; Claudio Nash Rojas, Director of the Human Rights Center of the Law School of the University of Chile; with Judith Schönsteiner, Director of the Human Rights Center of the Diego Portales University Law School, and with senior officials from the Chilean Foreign Ministry. On that occasion, the Commissioner made the presentation of the ESCR Unit in order to establish collaboration links.

United States: Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On October 23, 2012, a specialist with the IACHR Executive Secretariat participated in a roundtable organized by the Open Society Foundation to discuss Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities , which concerns to the right to live independently and to be included in the community. The IACHR specialist introduced a panel that explored the possibilities of using national, regional, and international human rights mechanisms for the application and interpretation of the right of every person with a disability to be included in the community.
