Washington D.C. - The
Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (SRFOE) of the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) invite to
participate in the consultative phase of a project that seeks to identify
recurring challenges and best practices for the participation of the different
actors of the Americas in the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
The consultative phase
will be public and open and is aimed at members of civil society, media,
journalists' associations, and independent journalists who are encouraged to
respond to the consultation questionnaire, providing information and concrete
examples of situations that reflect common patterns and/or obstacles, as well
as lessons learned and good practices in reporting information related to
freedom of expression, safety of journalists and access to information under
the UN UPR.
During this phase, it
is also expected to receive information and inputs from other actors, including
the States of the Americas, United Nations teams in the field, and national
human rights institutions in the region. It will also include interviews with
actors who have contributed or seek to contribute to the process.
At the end of this
period, it is planned to convene an internal session to analyze and discuss the
inputs received and gather additional information as required. At the end of
this process, various promotional and training activities will be carried out
to disseminate the materials and practical documents. The Office of the Special
Rapporteur encourages the different stakeholders to accompany and actively
participate in all phases of this project, which will be open from this moment
on.
