THE OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR PARTICIPATED IN

TRAINING SESSIONS DURING THE IBERO-AMERICAN JUDICIAL SUMMIT

The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) participated and sponsored the "Sessions for Jurisprudencial Dialogue and Specialized Training on Transparency, Freedom of Expression and Access to Information", which took place on March 26 and 27 during the XVIII Ibero-American Judicial Summit.

The event, held in Asuncion, Paraguay, attended by ministers of the Courts, judges, legal experts and representatives of schools, among which were members of the Office of the Special Rapporteur, sponsor of the meeting with Unesco’s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Edison Lanza, was responsible for the initial conference after the opening ceremony in a video broadcast from Washington, in which he highlighted the necessary dialogue between the judicial system of each country and the Inter-American human rights system. He also appreciated the importance of having judges capable of acting with guarantees of independence within the Judicial Power, as these qualities enable them to have independent judgment to resolve issues related to power and freedom of expression.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the high courts of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Dominican Republic.
