Washington, D.C. - The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the IACHR organized jointly with Reporters Without Borders and the Inter-American Dialogue, the public forum "Freedom of Expression in the Americas: Persistent threats and emerging challenges". Programed for April 24th, the forum will provide a public space to analyze persistent threats, emerging challenges and potential solutions to protect freedom of expression in the Americas.

In a year in which two out of every three Latin Americans will elect new leaders, freedom of expression continues to be a crucial pillar of the democratic systems of the region, despite the fact of the continuous threats and a situation of greater fragility. In 2017, 22 media workers were killed in the Americas, and other practices - from threats of violence to criminal prosecutions, - were employed against people exercising their freedom of expression to better inform society. In addition, during 2017 new challenges to democratic debate have emerged, including the deliberate and malevolent dissemination of misinformation, or "false news", and the corresponding danger of overregulation by governments in response.

During the morning of the 24th, Special Rapporteur Edison Lanza will analyze, alongside international experts and journalists, the situation of freedom of expression in the continent in the framework of the 2017 annual report of the office of the special rapporteur for freedom of expression of the IACHR.
