Modeling Good Students

On the second of the December, 30 WIS students missed the last half of lunch as they travelled to the building of the Organization of American States (OAS) to participate in the 34th three-day model conference based on the OAS actual conferences. Most of these delegates were about to experience their first model conference, and there was a slightly stressed air to the group as they stood on the steps in front of the Hall of Peace, waiting for their bus. This group of students have been preparing for their conference ever since late October, learning the art of debating in parliamentary procedural style and writing resolutions.

Valuable experience for STETHS students at MOAS in Washington

A student/teacher delegation from St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) recently attended the 34th Model Organization of American States (MOAS) General Assembly for High Schools in Washington, DC, USA. (...)

Two students of STETHS, Dominic Blair and Delion Bowes, were elected to the MOAS executive for the next assembly in November.

Vice-Principal Donna Hendricks who accompanied the delegation said the trip presented a “wonderful opportunity” to “boost confidence” as well as improve leadership styles among her students. It was also an opportunity for students and faculty to contemplate the varied problems in the hemisphere and help to propose and arrive at resolutions, she said.

MOAS participation enriches lives of students, educators

The 34th Model Organization of American States was Dec. 2-4 in Washington, D.C. This program of the Organization of American States is designed to promote democratic values among the youth of the Western Hemisphere by familiarizing students and faculty in a role-playing simulation in which student delegations represent OAS member nations. (...)

Forty-eight students from Midland and Lee high schools and Trinity School attended this year’s “dialogue” of member nations. And while students wrote resolutions on issues, ran for office in their respective committees and debated complex issues, there was an added value to being a part of this larger group. All 34 member nations were represented by student delegations, which means that just over 400 students and faculty members were involved. The participants were from six U.S. states, the District of Columbia, the territory of Puerto Rico and seven countries. By attending this conference, our students received a broader idea of the world we live in and had the opportunity to meet students with completely different priorities and values.

BHS Students get first-hand experience in global leadership

The MOAS 2015 held in Washington DC this week is the largest conference in recent years. (...) This is Belize High School first representation at the MOAS but definitely not the last. Principal Jamie Lee Usher is extremely pleased with her students' performance and commitment. Having been assigned to represent the island nation of Barbados in October, preparation began fast and furious, with our delegates meeting weekly to prepare their position papers and research article rebuttals. The delegates are charged with the responsibility to represent Barbados's interests, policies and perspectives on the topics of the agenda.

A total of 12 seniors from Belize High School have been working hard to debate, negotiate and have resolutions related to hemispheric issues.
