Washington, D.C. – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is set to hold during its 186th Period of Sessions an ex-officio hearing on the topic "Arbitrary deprivation of nationality and other human rights violations in Nicaragua." The hearing is to take place in person, from 2:45 until 4 pm PST on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the facilities of the University of California, Los Angeles.
The aim of this event is to gather information from civil society organizations and victims of human rights violations concerning the measures recently adopted by the State of Nicaragua to arbitrarily deprive scores of individuals of their nationality, along with other human rights violations.
Since this Period of Sessions is set to start soon, the Commission will take applications from all organizations and victims interested in taking part in the hearing until 11:59 pm (time in Washington, D.C.) on March 3, 2023. Interested parties will need to register here. In keeping with Article 66 of the IACHR's Rules of Procedure, anyone interested will need to properly identify themselves and explain why they would like to take part in the hearing.
The IACHR invites all organizations to submit, in writing, any documentation or information they deem relevant to the topic of the hearing. The Commission will select the organizations who take part in the hearing.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
