Environmental Law, Policies and Economics

The Department has been working at both the regional and hemispheric levels to strengthen economic, social, and environmental policies so as to ensure that they are mutually reinforcing and contribute to sustainable development. The Department has also focused on capacity building related to environmental management amid the economic integration and liberalization of trade in the region.

Ongoing Projects and Initiatives

Caribbean Emergency Legislation Project

The objective of the project is to build legislative capacity to enhance legal and institutional frameworks for state of emergency and budget appropriation in eleven CARICOM countries and the Dominican Republic. Further, the project aims to make recommendations on how to improve legislative channels and administrative procedures during, and immediately after, the occurrence of a natural disaster. More..

 

Trade and environment

To respond to trade-related capacity building development needs in the area of environmental management, this project, executed with the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), aims to address priority challenges of OAS Member States (Western Hemisphere) on trade-related capacities in environmental management, as identified in their national strategies for trade related capacity building under the Hemispheric Cooperation Plan, in the following areas: strengthening capacities in the sound management of chemicals, enhancing public participation and the effective enforcement of environmental laws,  improving market-based approaches to the conservation of biological diversity, strengthening educational capacities in the area of trade and environment.
