Component 1 : Interoperability and Access to Data

Provide a mechanism to locate, evaluate, and access biological data and information from a distributed network of cooperating data and information sources from across the Americas through an Internet-based search service. This will allow Internet users to search through an assortment of standardized descriptions (metadata) of different information products (such as databases, maps, websites, other information systems, etc.) to identify those that meet their particular requirements.

The five  Coordinating Institutions (CIs) selected to implement this component and support the six Thematic Networks (TN) of IABIN were selected under international competitive selection:

1. Invasive Species: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) / National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII), a multi-disciplinary science organization that provides access to information on biological resources, with focus on biology, geography, geology, geospatial information, and water data.
