Supporting Environmental Management through Sustainable Industry, Agriculture, Forestry, and Tourism.

Participating countries: All Hemisphere

Summary.  The Office for Sustainable Development and Environment (DSD) of the GS/OAS, in collaboration with several OAS member States, is doing analytical work that illustrates - for the Americas Hemisphere - advancements in Environmental Management through Sustainable Industry, Agriculture, Forestry, and Tourism.  The analysis will connect public-private partnerships, policies, legislation, and regulations to identify the most cost-effective way to achieve appropriate environmental quality targets through Voluntary Performance Mechanisms (VPMs) highlighting the importance of corporate social responsibility.  Entrepreneurs, civil society organizations and the business community are the drivers of these market based mechanisms promoted through Business Partners for Sustainable Development initiatives.  Examples are independent third party certification, consumer product labeling (eco labeling), and education regarding reuse and recycling.  The analytical work uses a case study approach, identifying key trends and opportunities.  It analyzes best practices from the Americas Hemisphere.
