4.6 Criminal Justice System Process - ICCS Crimes Level 1
4.6.6.10 Persons held for: Acts against the natural environment (ICCS 10)
Total number of persons held in Prisons, Penal Institutions or Correctional Institutions for “acts against the natural environment”. “Persons held” means persons held on a specified day and should exclude non-criminal prisoners held for administrative purposes, for example, persons held pending investigation into their immigration status or foreign citizens without a legal right to stay. “Acts against the natural environment” are those criminal offences defined in Section 10 of the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS), UNODC, Mar 2015, pp.89-93. [Web: http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/statistics/crime/ICCS/ICCS_English_2016_web.pdf.] They include: Acts that cause environmental pollution or degradation (1001); Acts involving the movement or dumping of waste (1002); Trade or possession of protected or prohibited species of fauna and flora (1003); Acts that result in the depletion or degradation of natural resources (1004); Other acts against the natural environment (1009); and subcategories of those, as listed on pp. 30-31 of the ICCS.
