Environmental Law, Policy and

Governance

Goal

To contribute to good environmental governance, by supporting the development and strengthening of environmental laws, policies and institutions, as the foundation for sustainable development in the region.

Mission-Framework

The Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) supports OAS member States in the design and implementation of policies, programs and projects oriented to integrate environmental priorities with poverty alleviation, and socio-economic development goals, translating sustainable development and environmental protection goals into concrete actions that have impact at the national level. In this context, the DSD is guided by the principle that the exercise of democracy promotes the preservation and good stewardship of the environment, as well as sustainable development (Article 15, Inter-American Democratic Charter). Good governance within each country and at the international level is essential for sustainable development. At the domestic level, sound environmental, social and economic policies, democratic institutions responsive to the needs of the people, the rule of law, anti-corruption measures, gender equality and an enabling environment for investment are the basis for sustainable development (World Summit on Sustainable Development Plan of Implementation, Article 4)

The DSD is responsible for various tasks and initiatives in the area of environmental law and governance with the objective of supporting countries in making fundamental decisions which engage all stakeholders, and encourage accountability and respect for sustainable development principles and institutions. These initiatives aim to address mandates of OAS political organs and the Summits of the Americas process, including the 1996 Summit of the Americas on Sustainable Development in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, where member States established institutional arrangements and the Inter-American Forum on Environmental Law (FIDA)
