Mitigation Planning Exercise

The Problem

You have been exposed to techniques for hazard mapping and vulnerability assessment, and you have heard the use of hazard maps and vulnerability assessments in development planning. The problem is how to use this information so that it can aid in the mitigation of disaster, and as a result bring about development that is sustainable.

The Exercise

The following exercise is meant to help in the development of strategies for integrating mitigative measures in all aspects of development.

(1) Use an image to:

Describe Disaster Mitigation as it exists in your territory

• What system
• Strengths
• Weaknesses
• Whether there is opportunity for development.

(2) Using the same image visualize the "willed future" that is what you think could be the future direction of disaster mitigation in your territory. Describe

• Where to
• How you propose to get there
• Key the actors in the process you develop
• Problems you are likely to encounter
• Major needs for implementing your system

You will have 1 ½ hours to complete the exercise.

Groups will then make presentations in the following manner:

• One presenter for each image
• Supporting explanations will be provided by the rest of the group. Presentation time will be 10 minutes.
• One member of the group will record the points made during the presentation.
