Mauricio Solano-Peralta from Costa Rica joined the Department for Sustainable Development early 2009. He has a Bsc. in industrial
engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica and got his Msc. (cum laude) in the sustainable use of energy sources from
the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. His thesis focused in electrification of isolated regions and coupling of renewable
energies to reduce environmental impacts, improve social well-being and reduce costs attached to diesel-generated electricity in the
Ecuadorian Amazons. He spent time in the Joint Research Center of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy carrying out an internship
for the Renewables Unit.
Before the Netherlands, Mauricio lived for a year in Kolkata, India working for a local NGO that dedicated to triple bottom line issues-
people, planet, profit. He recently worked in the University of Rome La Sapienza for the Biofuels Unit of the Inter-univeristy Research
Center for Sustainable Development.
As energy specialist, Mauricio is involved among other projects in the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Program, US-Brazil Biofuels
Initiative, and giving support to main activities of the section.
He loves biking, travelling, and playing futbol, ping pong, and chess, he is fluent in Spanish, English and Italian. He is a highly
motivated and open-minded person with strong social and environmental commitments and values.
