INTERVENTION BY THE PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF SURINAME TO THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL, TO PAY POSTHUMOUS TRIBUTE TO THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA, AMBASSADOR BERNARDO ÁLVAREZ

December 1, 2016 - Washington D.C.

The original statement is available here.

Thank you Mr. Chairman,

The delegation of Suriname is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Ambassador Álvarez.

Ambassador Álvarez was a well-respected diplomat and a person with dignity. Above all he was a good friend to most of us sitting around this table and a well-wisher for the Caribbean. With the passing of Ambassador Álvarez, the Organization of American States has lost a great collaborator and an experienced diplomat. Venezuela has lost a son, who defended the wellbeing of the People of Venezuela.

On behalf of the Government and the People of the Republic of Suriname, I take this opportunity to express our sincere condolences to the Government and the People of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

We urge our colleagues at the Mission of Venezuela to be resilient during this period of bereavement, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Ambassador Alvarez will be truly missed and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

Thank you!
