(1:00 p.m. EDT)

The United States is greatly honored to be hosting the General Assembly
of the OAS and we are deeply committed to the democratic principles of
the founding of the OAS and of the OAS’s evolution. I look forward to
further discussion that we had last night at the Ministers’ meeting.
Before I do that, however, before we go to lunch and to discussion, I
would like to make a special acknowledgment, and that is of Luigi
Einaudi, the outgoing Assistant Secretary General of the OAS.
Many of you may not know this, but Ambassador Einaudi comes from very
distinguished stock. His grandfather of the same name was the
(inaudible) and became the first President of the Republic of Italy
after the fall of Mussolini. The same commitment to liberty and
democracy that defined the life of President Einaudi has defined the
life and service of Ambassador Eiunadi.
Especially in these past several months, he has shepherded and cared for
the organization as Acting Secretary General. Ladies and gentleman,
please rise with me and raise your glasses to Luigi Einaudi. One of my
nation’s finest diplomats, and one of our hemisphere’s most dedicated
champions of freedom.
