On February 12, 2018, the new OAS SG Special Representative for Belize-Guatemala Affairs, Washington Abdala, attended his first meetings in Washington, D.C. with Secretary General Luis Almagro and his Chief of Staff, Ambassador Gonzalo Koncke.

Following the meeting with the Secretary General, Mr. Abdala met with the ambassadors of Belize and Guatemala to discuss the current political situation as well as to coordinate the agenda for his first official visit to the neighboring countries and the OAS AZ Office.

The new Special Representative is responsible for facilitating political and diplomatic negotiations between the Governments of Belize and Guatemala directed at finding a peaceful and permanent solution to their longstanding differendum. He will oversee the operations of the OAS Office in the Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Zone --the only OAS civilian peace-keeping mission in the field deployed to ease inter-state tensions.
