Soil Degradation and Increasing Sedimentation

Part of the sedimentation of the San Juan River and its coastal zone is produced as a result of natural processes, according to historic documents. Nevertheless, road construction, the advancing agricultural frontier, and hillside farming without adequate soil-conservation techniques exacerbate sedimentation problems, as well the emerging problems arising from open-pit mining and the extraction of construction materials.
