Pollution of Water Bodies

The main causes of water pollution are the indiscriminate use of pesticides and fertilizers, especially where intensive farming practices are used, and urban, industrial, and agroindustrial waste discharges. The water bodies being affected in Nicaragua are Lake Nicaragua, the San Juan River and its coastal zone, the wetlands to the south of Lake Nicaragua. In Costa Rica the Caño Negro wetlands, the Colorado River, and the Tortuguero canals are suffering the consequences of degraded water quality. Sporadic die-offs of aquatic fauna and flora give evidence of such degradation, as do small-scale and occasional studies of water quality that have been carried out in some parts of the SJRB.
