 Support for local environmental
management. Costa Rica . This project responds to the need to develop new
management models to attack the problems of transboundary pollution. Its
purpose is to develop and test a system that brings municipal authorities
and representatives of civil society together. The focus will be on
planning for the prevention of pollution and ways to handle and treat
industrial and household solid waste and wastewater in critical subbasins
and micro-basins. The Association of Municipalities of the San Juan River
Basin and local civil society groups will participate in its execution.
The proposal includes the design of economic mechanisms to help the town
of San Carlos; at the pilot level, to recover costs and obtain additional
resources to build management capacities. This activity is complementary
to demonstration project 11(b). Reclamation of the
Oyate River Subbasin. Nicaragua. To be executed by the Association of
Municipalities of the San Juan River (AMURS), this project aims to
establish a basin committee in the Oyate River subbasin in order to foster
reclamation actions. One of the major components of this project will be
the active participation of the Municipal Sustainable Development
Commission of Morrito in a pilot project that can serve as a model for
other subbasins. The experience will be shared with San Carlos, Costa Rica
(see 11(a)). Information will be shared between two projects and later
examined in a bilateral workshop in which all the municipalities of the
SJRB will be invited to participate. |
