Conservation of the Las Camelias Wildlife Refuge. Costa Rica

The purpose of the project is to study a co-management scheme between MINAE/Arenal-Huetar Norte Conservation Area and the community of the Las Camelias Wetlands Wildlife Refuge. An effort will be made to reclaim the basins of the Gaucaliti and Pizotillo rivers, which nourish the wetlands, by formulating a plan to reduce sedimentation and multiply the economic opportunities and technical skills of the local people in the productive management of natural resources. This activity will be complemented by project 9(c) to be carried out in Nicaragua.

Community organization and education for the control of fires. Costa Rica and Nicaragua

The purpose of this pilot project is to foster community participation and test new methods to prevent and control forest fires in Costa Rica, and then share this experience with Nicaragua. Project execution will be shared by the Guanacaste Conservation Area of MINAE and the towns in the subbasins to the south of Lake Nicaragua and to the north of the protected areas of Costa Rican Cordillera Volcánica. One aim is to prevent forest fires occurring outside of national parks and reserves, and thus their possible impact on those areas. Another is to train the local populations of countries to use fire as a tool without causing unnecessary harm to conservation areas or contravening the principles of sound natural resource management.

Reclamation of the Tepenaguasapa River subbasin. Nicaragua

The aim of this project is to facilitate and test different schemes for community organization and management in the area of subbasin rehabilitation. A local NGO, Fundación del Río (the River Foundation) will execute it in concert with 8 communities. Fundación del Río has initiated reclamation project for several tributaries of the San Juan River. This project will try to help local communities take responsibility for the recovery and management of the Tepenaguasapa River sub-basin. It will establish a monitoring program, foster alternative land uses and training, and design a reclamation plan. This demonstration project will be coordinated with project 9(a) in Costa Rica.

Ara ambigua and Dipterix panamensis habitat recovery. Costa Rica and Nicaragua

This demonstration project will bring together civil society groups from both countries and both sides of the San Juan River in an effort to reclaim and save the gallery forest habitat that is home to the green macaw (Ara ambigua), a highly endangered species that nests in the almond trees (Dipterix panamensis) that grow on river banks and are appreciated for their hard wood. Reclaiming this habitat would also help to conserve the undergrowth and root systems that protect the river. This pilot project will be carried out in the subbasins of the Cureña and Cureñita rivers in Costa Rica and some of the forests of the Indo-Maíz Biological Reserve in Nicaragua. The executing bodies will be ASCOMAFOR in Costa Rica and Fundación del Río in Nicaragua.
