Conflict management for the La Virgen hydroelectric project. Costa Rica

MINAE-SINAC will execute this project, whose purpose is to identify conflicts, at a national level, generated by the La Virgen hydroelectric plant and apply conflict management methods to resolve them. This experience then be used in formulating a strategy in the SAP section on involving stakeholders in conflict resolution. In addition, it will aid in obtaining more accurate information on the incremental costs of designing, building, and operating such plants and what global benefits are involved.

Fund for the development of agroforestry activities in Cárdenas Municipality. Nicaragua

The purpose of this demonstration project is to create and test community financing of agroforestry activities in the municipality of Cárdenas. A revolving fund will be formed for small-scale producers who want to raise indigenous commercial species of trees in deforested areas. An economically viable strategy for the sustainable use of local natural resources will be formulated, with the purpose of halting the migration of small farmers toward as yet uncultivated lands or into Costa Rica. The project will be executed by a committee of representatives of civil society, and will be coordinated by the mayor’s office.

Sustainable use and rehabilitation of the Río Frío subbasin. Costa Rica

This project will be executed by Productores Unidos para el Desarrollo (Producers United for Development, an NGO based in the cantons of Guatuso and Los Chiles). It will support the actions to conserve and rehabilitate the basin of the Río Frío, which flows into Lake Nicaragua. Plans for the management of second-growth forest and the creation of model farms will be drawn up. Also, ways to make these efforts financially sustainable, such as through the payment for environmental services, will be identified and three nurseries for native species will be created. Indigenous groups and women will take part in this project.

Restoration and management of the banks of the Sarapiquí and Sucio rivers. Costa Rica

The aim is the reforestation of the degraded banks in the lower subbasins of both rivers. This will be approached by making boatsmen engaged in ecotourism, farmers, and nearby communities aware of the problem, and then getting them organized and committed. In this way the quality of the local ecosystems can be better controlled and monitored. Through MINAE, appropriate economic mechanisms and incentives will be designed for the payment of an environmental services fee by landowners benefiting from the project.
