QUITO, Ecuador – Representatives from sixty Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Observer countries today renewed their full support on key OAS issues such as promoting regional peace and security, social development, integration and consolidating the regional agenda.

As the OAS prepared to inaugurate its 34th regular General Assembly session here later today, the Permanent Observers expressed satisfaction with the Western Hemisphere body’s work and thanked the OAS for the opportunity to support programs to strengthen democracy, peace and hemispheric development.

Among contributions for a variety of OAS programs announced today were those from France, $341,000; Italy, $330,000; Finland, 300,000 euros; Luxemburg, 50,000 euros; Philippines, $15,000; and Turkey, $12,200, while Thailand announced contributions for OAS fellowship and training programs.

In welcoming the delegates from Permanent Observer states, Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patricio Zuquilanda, stressed that this dialogue with the observers was an important and timely “opportunity for the OAS member states’ Foreign Ministers to exchange views and strengthen dialogue with the Permanent Observer states’ delegations.”

The Ecuadorian Foreign Minister noted that globalization has ushered in unprecedented opportunities to “foster cooperation between the Americas and Europe, between the Americas and Africa, and between the Americas and Asia.”

Meanwhile, welcoming the increasing role of Permanent Observers in the OAS, Secretary General César Gaviria said it “reflects an increasing engagement by the international community on our priority agenda issues and projects.” He thanked the Permanent Observers states for the contributions announced during the meeting, noting they are an important financial and human resource boost to hemispheric development.

Permanent Observer contributions to OAS programs have totaled some $50 million over the past five years.
