COLOMBIA TO RECEIVE ON-SITE VISIT OF THE OAS ANTICORRUPTION MECHANISM

With the consent of Colombia, a Commission of the OAS Anticorruption Mechanism (Mechanism for Follow-Up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption – MESICIC), will carry out an on-site visit to that country from April 8 to 10, 2013, as part of the review process that this Mechanism has been executing during the course of the Fourth Round of Review, in relation to the implementation of the provision of the Convention related to oversight bodies for the prevention, investigation and sanction of acts of corruption, as well as the recommendations that were formulated to the countries in the First Round.

The Commission that will visit Colombia will be made up of representatives of Costa Rica and Guatemala to the MESICIC, and from the Department of Legal Cooperation of the OAS Secretariat for Legal Affairs, as the Technical Secretariat of the MESICIC. The Commission will meet with representatives of the main oversight bodies of the country, in order to gather on-the-ground information regarding the manner in which they carry out their functions, which will be input for the drafting, consideration and adoption of the report on Colombia that the MESICIC will adopt in September of this year.

Similarly, it is anticipated that this Commission will meet with Colombian civil society organizations, private sector representatives, professional associations and academics, in order to address topics related to the issues being analyzed in the Fourth Round of the MESICIC.

The MESICIC is a cooperation mechanism between States, with the participation of civil society organizations, established within the framework of the OAS, in which the legal/institutional framework of each country is reviewed for suitability with the Inter-American Convention against Corruption as well as the objective results achieved therein.
