OAS/REMJA HOLDS TRAINING FOR MAGISTRATES AND JUDGES FROM THE SOUTHERN CONE ON CYBERCRIME INTERNATIONAL LEGAL COOPERATION.

The Organization of American States (OAS), within the framework of the REMJA (Meetings of Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas) and sponsored by the United States government with support from the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in Argentina, will hold, from May 17 to 19 2016, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a training workshop on legal cooperation against cybercrime, which will target 50 judges in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile.

This regional workshop aims to train officials on cybercrime international conventions and provisions, as well as on other legal tools available in handling digital evidence, procedural legislation related to cybercrime, and also on the importance of international legal cooperation for prosecution and sanctions.

The workshop is being organized by the Department of Legal Cooperation of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs of the OAS in its capacity as Technical Secretariat of the REMJA, and in compliance with the recommendations of the Working Group on Cybercrime of REMJA. This workshop is also a part of the Training Program of the OAS on Cybercrime. Within the program and since the year of 2004, there have been 26 workshops on cybercrime in total, which were responsible for training more than 1,500 participants, including legislators, prosecutors, investigators, judges and magistrates in areas such as legislation; investigation techniques and prosecution; management, conservation and admissibility of electronic and digital evidence, as well as international cooperation.

The Working Group on Cybercrime of REMJA was created as part of this process in 1999, and is the major hemispheric forum for strengthening international cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of cybercrime. It also facilitates information and best practices exchange in cybercrime, making recommendations to improve and ensure effectiveness in fighting and preventing this crime.
