OAS Member States Meet to Strengthen International Cooperation in Criminal Matters and Extradition

Central Authorities and other government experts on international legal cooperation from member states of the OAS will meet March 31 - April 2 in San Salvador to further regional cooperation in the areas of extradition and mutual assistance in criminal matters.

The Fourth Meeting of Central Authorities and Other Experts on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters and Extradition, which operates in the framework of the Meeting of Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas (REMJA), will have two components.  The first will be a training session on March 31 on use of the Secure Electronic Communication System (Groove), which is the cornerstone of the Hemispheric Information Exchange Network for Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters and Extradition ("Criminal Matters Network") The second component is the plenary session open to all delegations, on April 1 and 2. 

The opening session will be lead by El Salvador’s President of the Supreme Court Agustín García Calderón, along with Minister of Public Security René M. Figueroa Figueroa, Attorney General Félix Garrid Safie Parada, Minister of Foreign Affairs Marisol Argueta de Barillas, and the OAS Secretary for Legal Affairs Jean Michel Arrighi.

In addition, representatives from the Ibero-American Judicial Cooperation Network (IberRed); the European Judicial Network (RJE); the European Union’s Judicial Cooperation Unit (Eurojust); the International Criminal Court, United Nations and the Ministry of Justice of Spain will also participate.

The meeting in San Salvador is being held pursuant to the mandate from the last Meeting of Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas (REMJA-VII) and Resolution AG/RES.2369 of the OAS General Assembly.
