On
May 15 in Brasilia, Brazil, at the 6th Meeting of the
REMJA
Working Group on Legal Cooperation in Criminal Matters, which brings
together the central authorities and international legal cooperation
agencies responsible for mutual assistance in criminal matters and
extradition of the states of the Americas,
the OAS
General Secretariat will officially present the new web platform
of the OAS/REMJA Hemispheric Network for Legal
Cooperation on Criminal Matters. This new platform is the fruit
of a joint effort between the Department of Legal Cooperation and the
Department of Information and Technology Services of the OAS, in
compliance with the commitment to further modernize the network entered
into with the ministers of justice and attorneys general of the Americas
at
REMJA
IX, held in Quito, Ecuador, in
November 2012. The main topics that the OAS General Secretariat
plans to present in Brasilia include updating and migrating, to a new
and more modern web page, the legal information on mutual assistance in
criminal matters and extradition that the member states have been
supplying; the inclusion of an intelligent search engine for
multilateral and bilateral treaties on legal and judicial cooperation;
directories of the member states’ central authorities and national
points of contact responsible for mutual assistance in criminal matters
and extradition; and progress with the incorporation of new
authorization and authentication systems for accessing the private
services that the network will soon be offering, such as instant
messaging and the secured exchange of files and documents.
In
addition, the General Secretariat will also report on the status of its
safe electronic communication system and the secure internet-based
videoconferencing tool that the network currently offers.
