OAS CRIMINAL MATTERS NETWORK PRESENTED AS AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR STRENGTHENING INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION BETWEEN CENTRAL AUTHORITIES

At the initial global meeting on “Effective International Cooperation by Central Authorities,” held in Cartagena de las Indias, Colombia on February 19 – 21, 2013, the Criminal Matters Network of the REMJA (Meetings of Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas) was presented as a useful and effective tool developed in the OAS for strengthening and making more efficient and expeditious international cooperation among central authorities.

The presentation, made by Mr. Jorge García González, Director of the OAS Department of Legal Cooperation and Technical Secretariat of the REMJA, referred to the nature, scope and current components of the Network. The principal OAS developments achieved in mutual assistance in criminal matters and extradition, through the REMJA and its Working Group on Legal Cooperation, were also highlighted.

In addition, Mr. Ignacio Ibáñez Ferrándiz of the OAS Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) participated in the event, as well as other international organizations. The goal of this meeting, organized jointly by the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, and the Terrorism Prevention Branch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, is to identify relevant challenges, exchange information and best practices and promote networking and coordination among central authorities.
