MINISTERS OF JUSTICE AND ATTORNEYS GENERAL OF THE AMERICAS MEET IN QUITO

On November 28 and 29, 2012, the city of Quito will host the ninth gathering of the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of the Member States of the OAS.

REMJA IX (Ninth Meeting of Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas) will be a new opportunity for the American States, through their Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General, to continue to advance in strengthening access to justice as well as hemispheric legal cooperation.

The meeting in Quito will also provide the OAS General Secretariat, through its Department of Legal Cooperation, the opportunity to present to the Ministers and Attorneys General the progress made in relation to the Hemispheric Legal Cooperation Network  in Criminal Matters (Criminal Matters Network ) and its additional secure video component, the results of the training program to strengthen legal cooperation in the area of cybercrime, as well as the latest developments of the Inter-American Program of Judicial Facilitators, among other topics.

The President of the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, and the Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Worship of Ecuador, Johana Pesántez. Inter-American Program of Judicial Facilitators, are scheduled to participate in the opening session of REMJA IX.

The REMJA process is the hemispheric cooperation mechanism on justice and international legal cooperation that is carried out in the framework of the OAS, involving the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of the Americas with responsibility in these matters. Its objective is to consolidate the rule of law in the region by strengthening the mechanisms for access to justice and international legal cooperation through the exchange of information and experiences, coordination of public policies and the creation of institutions and effective cooperation processes.
