OAS CRIMINAL MATTERS NETWORK HOLDS ANTI-TERRORISM WORKSHOP IN EL SALVADOR

As part of the Specialized Training Workshop on the Prevention and Fight against Terrorism and Its Financing held from July 3 to 6, 2012 in San Salvador, the Department of Legal Cooperation of the OAS Secretariat for Legal Affairs, as Technical Secretariat of the REMJA process (Meetings of Ministers of Justice or of Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas ), was invited to deliver a presentation on, among other aspects, the scope, usefulness and benefits offered by the OAS Criminal Matters Network in facilitating and enhancing the efficiency of international legal cooperation.

The event, which was organized by the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) with the sponsorship of the Office of the Prosecutor General of El Salvador in collaboration with the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, was attended by government prosecutors and judges as well as elements of the specialized, customs, and border police and financial intelligence analysts in El Salvador.

In his remarks, the representative of the Department of Legal Cooperation drew attention to measures taken in the framework of the OAS to strengthen legal cooperation on criminal matters in the region, including the adoption of the Inter-American Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters, institutionalization of the REMJA process, and consolidation of the Criminal Matters Network.

At present the Network is composed of its public, private, and security components linked via secure electronic communication and Internet videoconference systems, which have been consistently praised by states as useful electronic tools for making cooperation and information exchange more efficient among their authorities responsible for international legal cooperation in criminal matters.
