AG/RES. 1405 (XXVI-O/96)

SUPPORT FOR THE WORK OF THE INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF HUMAN RIGHTS

(Resolution adopted at the eighth plenary session, held on June 7, 1996)

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

CONSIDERING AND REAFFIRMING its resolution AG/RES. 1334 (XXV-O/95) on support for the work of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights;

RECALLING the Declaration of Montrouis: A New Vision of the OAS, which affirms that the inter-American system has valuable experience and well-earned prestige in the promotion and protection of human rights;

TAKING NOTE of the significant work accomplished by the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights in promoting human rights through the creation of educational programs to inform the population of their rights and of their obligation to respect the rights of others;

RECOGNIZING the contribution that the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights has made to the promotion of human rights and to the interrelationship of systems for protection of the individual established in international provisions on human rights, on international humanitarian law, and on refugees; and

EXPRESSING ITS RECOGNITION of the work carried out by the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights in the countries of the Hemisphere to promote incorporation of international provisions into domestic law,

RESOLVES:

1. To highlight the mission in which the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights has been engaged since it was created in 1980 and to urge it to continue its important work for the cause of human rights in the Hemisphere and in fulfillment of its objectives of defining and promoting human rights.

2. To urge the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights to continue its work on the teaching and promotion of human rights in the countries of the Hemisphere.

3. To commend the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights for its activities to advance the teaching, promotion, and harmonious application of international provisions on human rights, international humanitarian law, and refugees.

4. To urge the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights to foster among the member states of the Organization the exchange of technical information and educational tools aimed at teaching human rights and developing a culture of peace.
