AG/RES. 1392 (XXVI-O/96)

SUPPORT FOR AND ENHANCEMENT OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN THE AMERICAS

(Resolution adopted at the eighth plenary session, held on June 7, 1996)

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

HAVING SEEN the Report of the Permanent Council on Enhancement of the Administration of Justice in the Americas (AG/doc.3341/96 rev. 1 corr. 1), presented pursuant to resolutions AG/RES. 1325 (XXV-O/95) and AG/RES. 1326 (XXV-O/95);

CONSIDERING:

That the aforementioned resolutions state that greater awareness of the norms adopted within the framework of the Organization as well as training for judges and lawyers and support for modernizing national legal systems are urgently needed to enhance the administration of justice;

That implementation of those resolutions requires constant attention and action by the Organization; and

That, to that end, the Permanent Council has now begun scheduling subregional seminars and workshops, and that these activities must be continued, pursuant to the request of interested member states; and

BEARING IN MIND the proposals presented by the Secretary General in the document "The Law in a New Inter-American Order" and, in particular, the proposals contained in Chapter IV entitled "Improving the Administration of Justice in the Inter-American Sphere,"

RESOLVES:

1. To welcome the Report of the Permanent Council on Enhancement of the Administration of Justice in the Americas.

2. To instruct the Permanent Council, through its Working Group on Enhancement of the Administration of Justice in the Americas, in coordination with the Inter-American Juridical Committee and the General Secretariat, to continue working with national and international institutions involved in this subject on the organization of seminars or workshops aimed at achieving greater judicial cooperation in the region and at increasing awareness of the international rules of law emanating from the inter-American system, subject to the availability of budgeted funds, in accordance with resolutions AG/RES. 1325 (XXV-O/95) and AG/RES. 1326 (XXV-O/95).

3. To instruct the Permanent Council, in conjunction with the General Secretariat, to continue considering any requests from member states to the Organization for assistance in enhancing the administration of justice in their countries and to forward those requests through the appropriate channels, in accordance with resolution AG/RES. 1326 (XXV-O/95).

4. To request the Permanent Council to submit a report on compliance with this resolution to the General Assembly at its twenty-seventh regular session
