AG/RES. 1391 (XXVI-O/96)

PROCEDURES FOR PREPARING AND ADOPTING INTER-AMERICAN LEGAL INSTRUMENTS WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES

(Resolution adopted at the eighth plenary session, held on June 7, 1996)

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

CONSIDERING:

That, in resolution AG/RES. 1329 (XXV-O/95), the General Assembly instructed the General Secretariat to prepare draft guidelines covering the entire process of preparation of inter-American legal instruments, for review and comment by the Inter-American Juridical Committee and for submission to the Permanent Council, which would present a report thereon to the General Assembly at its twenty-sixth regular session;

That, in resolution CJI/RES. I-4/96, the Inter-American Juridical Committee acknowledged receipt of the document prepared by the General Secretariat entitled "Guidelines for the Preparation of Inter-American Instruments: A Background Study (Preliminary Draft)," (CJI/doc.7/95, August 16, 1995);

That in said resolution the Inter-American Juridical Committee resolved to include this topic on its agenda and to consider it as a matter of priority at its next regular meeting in August 1996, in order to formulate the comments requested by the General Assembly for submission to the Permanent Council; and

That the Permanent Council has presented its report, in which it indicates that it has not yet received comments from the Inter-American Juridical Committee in respect of this topic,

RESOLVES:

To renew the mandate given by resolution AG/RES. 1329 (XXV-O/95) and to request that the Inter-American Juridical Committee present to the Permanent Council as soon as possible its comments on the document prepared by the General Secretariat in order to enable the Permanent Council to present to the General Assembly at its twenty-seventh regular session the report on the draft guidelines covering the entire process of preparation of inter-American legal instruments.
