AG/RES. 1388 (XXVI-O/96)

OFFICES OF THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT IN THE MEMBER STATES

(Resolution adopted at the eighth plenary session, held on June 7, 1996)

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

HAVING SEEN the Report of the Permanent Council on the Evaluation of the Offices of the General Secretariat in the Member States (AG/doc.3331/96 corr. 1);

RECALLING:

That, in resolution AG/RES. 1340 (XXV-O/95), the Secretary General was requested to present to the Permanent Council in the second half of 1995 a study with specific proposals on the future of the Offices of the General Secretariat in the Member States, taking account of the recommendations and report of the Subgroup of the Working Group on the Strengthening of the OAS; and

That the Permanent Council was requested to take into account the Secretary General's study and submit to the General Assembly for consideration at its twenty-sixth regular session a report on the future of the Offices of the General Secretariat in the Member States;

BEARING IN MIND that the General Secretariat submitted the study requested (CP/doc.2742/96) early in May this year; and

CONSIDERING that there is a consensus among the member states that the offices should remain in operation but should concentrate their efforts on the Organization's cooperation activities in the member states,

RESOLVES:

1. To take note of the Report of the Permanent Council on the Evaluation of the Offices of the General Secretariat in the Member States and the study by the General Secretariat on the Offices of the General Secretariat in the Member States (CP/doc.2742/96).

2. To request the Permanent Council to finalize its consideration of the study by the General Secretariat and to request the Permanent Executive Committee of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CEPCIDI) to examine the study, particularly those proposals which fall within its mandate.

3. To request the Permanent Council and CEPCIDI to transmit their recommendations on the study to the Secretary General for prompt implementation.

4. To request the Permanent Council and CEPCIDI to report on the implementation of this resolution to the General Assembly at its twenty-seventh regular session.
