In the Ministerial Communiqué from the March 2002 Meeting of Health and Environment Ministers of the Americas (HEMA), the Ministers “urge the OAS, PAHO, UNEP … to continue to take steps to formally integrate issues related to health and environment in their respective work programs and to strengthen interagency cooperation so that it is part of their modus operandi".

These three partner organizations have had an active role in HEMA initiative. They have participated in Task Force meetings, Working Group meetings, organize and host HEMA information sessions for possible donors, and prepared strategies, proposals.
