Ambassador of Paraguay presents his credentials to the OAS Secretary General

The new Permanent Representative of Paraguay before the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Hugo Bernardino Saguier Caballero, today presented his Credentials to the hemispheric body’s Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza. (more)

OAS requests inmediate signing of the San José Agreement and supports the Secretary General's initiatives to facilitate dialogue in Honduras

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) passed Monday a Declaration in which the organization “calls for the immediate signing of the San José Agreement”, demands full guarantees to ensure the life and physical integrity of President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales, and supports the initiatives undertaken by the Secretary General José Miguel Insulza to facilitate dialogue and restoration of the constitutional order in Honduras. President Vázquez asserts that his country wishes to share "a revolution of intelligence and equality of opportunity" with the rest of the continent

The President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez, declared today before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) that his country wishes to share with his country’s brothers in the hemisphere “a revolution of intelligence and equality of opportunity,” through the expansion of the Ceibal Plan, implemented by his Government to provide a computer to every child and teacher in the public school system. OAS Secretary General participated in the opening of the XIII Annual Conference of the Andean Development Corporation

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Mr. José Miguel Insulza, on Wednesday participated in the opening of the XIII Annual Conference of the Andean Development Corporation (CAF), sponsored by the OAS and the Inter-American Dialogue foundation, on “Trade and Investment in the Americas”. Mr. Insulza spoke alongside the CAF Executive President, Mr. Enrique García, and the President of the Inter-American Dialogue foundation, Mr. Peter Hakim. (more)

Fortieth Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly to be held in Lima, Peru

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Thursday approved by acclamation a Resolution to hold the Fortieth Regular Session of the General Assembly of the OAS in the city of Lima, Peru, on June 6, 7 and 8, 2010. (more)

Ministers of Education will meet in Quito to evaluate strategies for strengthening secondary education

The hemisphere’s Ministers of Education will meet in Quito, Ecuador, August 12-14, to discuss the challenges and promises of secondary education. The ministerial meeting will take place within the framework of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) of the Organization of the American States (OAS). (more)

Colombia and Ecuador highlight role of OAS in issues of critical importance to Hemisphere

The Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) today welcomed the new Permanent Representative of Colombia, Ambassador Luis Alfonso Hoyos Aristizábal, and bid farewell to the Ambassador of Ecuador, Efrén Cocíos, who served as Permanent Representative of his country at the OAS for more than two years. OAS Secretary General to attend Summit of Tuxtla Group in Costa Rica

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza said, during a conversation on the political crisis in Honduras”, that “the overthrow of a democratic government by force is a setback, not only for the country that suffers and that watches the armed forces do away with democratic rule, but also for the whole region, and for that reason we cannot allow it happen.” (more)

OAS SUSPENDS MEMBERSHIP OF HONDURAS (July 5th, 2009)

The Special General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) decided today to suspend immediately the right to participate in the institution of Honduras following the coup d’Etat that expelled President José Manuel Zelaya from power. (more)

The OAS supports the Government of Guatemala and welcomes its commitment to investigate and clarify recent events

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OEA) approved, by acclamation, a Resolution to support the Government of the Republic of Guatemala, and welcomed the government’s commitment to investigate and clarify the recent events that have had a great socio-political impact on that country. OAS opens review process of Anti-Drug strategy in the Americas

The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), opened Wednesday a review process of the anti-drug strategy in the Americas, following a proposal by the Secretary General of the hemispheric institution, José Miguel Insulza, that established reducing demand as the main target. OAS Group of Friends of Haiti met in Washington to promote Donors Conference

The Organization of American States (OAS) Group of Friends of Haiti met this week in Washington, DC, to promote the Haiti Donors Conference which will take place on April 14 in the same city. Also took part in the meeting representatives from the United Nations, Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF). Secretary General of the Council of Europe: Regarding Human Rights “the key is what we do, not what we preach”

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis, said that for Human Rights to reach a dimension truly universal all countries, including well established democracies, need to accept the rules of the game and abide them. (more)
