CAROLINA STATE PORTS AUTHORITY
South Carolina was first settled by
planters from Barbados bringing with them a tropical plantation
economy, which they transferred to the semi-tropical climate of
the Carolina coastal lowlands. Here the flat Low Country and
many Sea Islands are laced with slow flowing rivers, creeks and
marshes, and here planters brought thousands of slaves directly
from Africa.
Colonial South Carolina was one of
the richest parts of North America with a dazzling variety of
architectural styles in Charleston and classic plantation
gardens; the planters built great irrigation systems and grew
rice, cotton and the dye-plant indigo, all heavily in demand in
Britain and Europe.
Nearly forty years following the
Civil War, Charlestonians united with citizens from all over the
Palmetto State to host an extravaganza of art, architecture
education and entertainment to stimulate trade with the West
Indies and Latin America. The
year was 1902. More than 675,000 individuals attended, planting
the seeds of achievement and friendship that we come together
now to harvest.
Meet the
leaders of today as they pause to reflect upon 1902’s
Charleston West Indies Exposition, to mark the achievements of
the past one hundred years, while building new friendships,
sharing new ideas to build a bridge to an even more vibrant
future.
