Although the subject is still scattered on policy agendas, the health of young people is recognized by many countries within the framework of priority care for the most vulnerable sectors. While it is expected that young people are less likely to get sick, there are certain issues that affect this particular sector of the population. The risk-related conducts associated with drugs and alcohol and sexual activity affect their physical and emotional integrity. Not only are these elements related to countries’ development levels, but there are also cultural and psychological variables that come into play. Therefore, from the public policy perspective, it is important to recognize and pay special attention to these particular matters. The following is a brief description of the situation as well as some of the areas being addressed from within the OAS on matters relating to drug and alcohol abuse, and sexual and reproductive health.
