The Second Course on Fundamental Elements for Identification and Protection of Stateless Persons and Prevention and Reduction of Statelessness in the Americas, was held at the Organization of American States headquarters on February 12, 2015.
The activity was staged by
the Permanent Council's Committee on Juridical
and Political Affairs (CAJP), pursuant to the
mandate established in General Assembly
resolution
AG/RES. 2826 (XLIV-O/14) “Prevention and
Reduction of Statelessness and Protection of
Stateless Persons in the Americas.”
The event was organized with
the support of the Department of International
Law of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs and
technical and financial assistance from the
Office of the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees (UNHCR).
It brought together more than
80 participants, including representatives of
permanent missions to the OAS, staff from
different areas of the General Secretariat, and
other stakeholders. The course was transmitted
live over the Organization's webcast service.
The Course helped sharpen the
participants' knowledge about the phenomenon of
statelessness and legal tools to identify and
protect stateless persons while preventing and
reducing cases of statelessness.
By General Assembly mandate,
the Department of International Law is charged
with implementing the
Inter-American Program for the Development of
International Law, under which it organizes
courses, symposiums, and seminars about a
variety of issues of international law that
feature on the Organization's agenda. The
Department also serves as a point of contact
under the
Cooperation Agreement between the General
Secretariat and UNHCR. Since 2010, the OAS
General Assembly has issued resolutions
exclusively focused on prevention and reduction
of statelessness in the Americas.
