Department of International Law reaffirms support for region's public defenders

Organized by the National Public Defense Office, with support from the Francisco Salomón Jiménez Castro Law School, the meeting brought together 80 public defenders from different departments.

The purpose of the event was to train public defenders in the application of the 100 Brasilia Rules, the Tokyo and Beijing Rules, and in OAS resolutions on public defense and human rights of vulnerable groups, among other issues; and promote the exchange of experiences and best practices observed in most of the countries of the Americas.

The Department of International Law was invited to deliver a lecture on "The Organization of American States and its Contribution to the Strengthening and Independence of Public Defender Offices in the Americas." OAS General Assembly resolutions on public defense were highlighted in the presentation, as were vulnerable groups.

This activity was organized under the terms of a cooperation agreement the OAS General Secretariat had signed with AIDEF on November 4, 2011. Other activities have already been carried out under said agreement.
