The Department participates in the Latin America and Caribbean Region Meeting on the Decade for People of African Descent

The purpose of the meeting was to boost the commitments taken on by the Latin American and Caribbean states in the course of the 12 years that have elapsed since the Third World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, held in Durban, South Africa in 2001. The meeting also provided an opportunity to evaluate best practices in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and establish priorities and strategies in connection with the Decade for People of African Descent instituted by the United Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The Department of International Law of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs of the OAS was invited by SEPPIR to deliver a presentation on the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination, and Related Forms of Intolerance.

Worth noting is the fact that the representatives of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean taking part in the meeting adopted a joint declaration recommending international, regional, and national strategies for promoting inclusion and overcoming racism, racial discrimination, and xenophobia. They also welcomed the opening for signature of the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination, and Related Forms of Intolerance and encouraged the states of the Americas to continue the process of signing and ratifying the aforementioned inter-American instrument.
