Inter-American Juridical
Committee member Dr. David P. Stewart
represented the Organization of American States
(OAS) advisory body at a workshop on "Big Data
in the Global South," held this past November
16-17 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Organized by the Institute
for Technology and Society, the workshop was
intended to create a forum to discuss the
benefits and risks associated with digital data
and the search for strategies to regulate the
field.
Dr. Stewart told participants
about the Committee's work in the area of
protection of personal data. In a report its
plenary adopted last March, the Inter-American
Juridical Committee proposed to the OAS member
states a dozen principles on privacy and
protection of personal data with annotations –
principles that could serve as a basis for
formulating and adopting laws to protect
personal privacy, reputation, and dignity.
The event brought together
representatives of states, international
organizations, civil society, academia, and the
private sector, among them United Nations
officials such as Joe Cannataci, the UN special
rapporteur for the right to privacy; and
Xianghong Hu, UNESCO program specialist for the
communication and information sector.
