Inter-American Juridical Committee Presents Annual Report to Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs

On Thursday, April 11, 2013, Dr. David P. Stewart, on behalf of the Inter-American Juridical Committee, presented that body’s annual report to the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs for the latter’s consideration, comments, and recommendations.

Credito: DDI/OEA

In his remarks, Dr. Stewart referred to the six final reports that the Committee had adopted in 2012, four of which fulfill requests from the General Assembly: “Strengthening the Inter-American System for Protection and Promotion of Human Rights” [CJI/RES. 192 (LXXX-O/12)]; “Privacy and Protection of Personal Data in the Americas” [CJI/RES. 186 (LXXX-O/12)]; Cultural Diversity in the Development of International Law [CJI/RES. 185 (LXXX-O/12)]; and “Access to Justice in the Americas” [CJI/RES. 187 (LXXX-O/12)]. He also alluded to two reports adopted in pursuance of General Assembly mandates—“Draft Model Law on Simplified Joint Stock Companies” [CJI/RES. 188 (LXXX-O/12)] and “Guide for Regulating the Use of Force and Protection of People in Situations of Internal Violence that do Not Qualify as Armed Conflict” (CJI/doc.401/12 rev.4)—concluding the Committee’s treatment of those issues.

On the subject of promotion of international law in the region, Dr. Stewart gave a report on the XXXIX Course on International Law, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 6 to 24, 2012. In all, 35 participants attended the course, the theme of which was “Law and Current International Relations.” He also announced that the Inter-American Juridical Committee would hold its next regular session at its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 2013, coinciding with the XL edition of the Course on International Law, which the Committee organizes each year in partnership with the OAS Department of International Law.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Stewart noted the Committee’s desire to continue carrying out its work in an active and positive way, giving each of the topics under its examination the importance it deserves.

The Chair of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs, Ambassador Andrés González Días, Permanent Representative of Colombia to the OAS, extended, through Dr. Stewart, his gratitude and appreciation to the Inter-American Juridical Committee for its work on the development and codification of international law.
