Inter-American Juridical Committee Presents Annual Report to Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs
On Thursday, April 11, 2013, Dr. David P. Stewart, on behalf of the Inter-American Juridical Committee, presented that body�s annual report to the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs for the latter�s consideration, comments, and recommendations.
In his remarks, Dr. Stewart
referred to the six final reports that the Committee
had adopted in 2012, four of which fulfill requests
from the General Assembly: �Strengthening the
Inter-American System for Protection and Promotion
of Human Rights� [CJI/RES. 192 (LXXX-O/12)];
�Privacy and Protection of Personal Data in the
Americas� [CJI/RES. 186 (LXXX-O/12)]; Cultural
Diversity in the Development of International Law [CJI/RES.
185 (LXXX-O/12)]; and �Access to Justice in the
Americas� [CJI/RES. 187 (LXXX-O/12)]. He also
alluded to two reports adopted in pursuance of
General Assembly mandates��Draft Model Law on
Simplified Joint Stock Companies� [CJI/RES. 188 (LXXX-O/12)]
and �Guide for Regulating the Use of Force and
Protection of People in Situations of Internal
Violence that do Not Qualify as Armed Conflict� (CJI/doc.401/12
rev.4)�concluding the Committee�s treatment of those
issues.
On the subject of promotion of
international law in the region, Dr. Stewart gave a
report on the XXXIX Course on International Law,
held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 6 to 24,
2012. In all, 35 participants attended the course,
the theme of which was �Law and Current
International Relations.� He also announced that the
Inter-American Juridical Committee would hold its
next regular session at its headquarters in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, in August 2013, coinciding with the
XL edition of the Course on International Law, which
the Committee organizes each year in partnership
with the OAS Department of International Law.
Concluding his remarks, Dr.
Stewart noted the Committee�s desire to continue
carrying out its work in an active and positive way,
giving each of the topics under its examination the
importance it deserves.
The Chair of the Committee on
Juridical and Political Affairs, Ambassador Andr�s
Gonz�lez D�as, Permanent Representative of Colombia
to the OAS, extended, through Dr. Stewart, his
gratitude and appreciation to the Inter-American
Juridical Committee for its work on the development
and codification of international law.
