Inter-American Juridical Committee concludes 105th regular session

The Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI) held its 105th regular session at its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 7 to 16, 2024.

In the course of the session the CJI adopted a report on " the participation of victims in criminal proceedings against acts of corruption," to help promote regional guidelines in this area based on procedural participation of civil associations and private, individual, and collective victims of acts of corruption. It also proposes the development of mechanisms that promote the harmonization of regional criminal procedural legislation consistent with international law and that ensure reparations are effectively comprehensive.

The Committee continued to work on topics on its agenda, including: Exceptionality in the use of force in the inter-American context; The principles of international law on which the inter-American system is based; Strengthening the accountability regime in the use of information and communication technologies; The legal implications of sea level rise in the inter-American regional context; Corporate responsibility of manufacturers and sellers of weapons in the area of human rights; and Update of the 2020 Model Inter-American Law 2.0 on Access to Public Information. It also added a new item to its agenda, entitled: Selection procedures and representativeness in the context of judicial independence.

During the session, the CJI played host to a large number of experts on international law and members of international organizations, who participated as guest lecturers at the forty-ninth Course on International Law. The course had a diverse agenda, composed of various topics, such as: conflict resolution and arbitration, foreign investment, human rights, electoral observation, the law of the sea, migration and internal displacement, and international humanitarian law.

The Committee will convene next year at its Rio de Janeiro headquarters from March 10 to 14, 2024.

As part of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs, the Department of Internacional Law acts as technical secretariat of the CJI.

The CJI serves as advisory body on juridical matters to the OAS. Its main duty involves the promotions of the progressive development and codification of international law.
