Dr. Mariana Salazar
Albornoz, Member of the Inter-American Juridical
Committee (CJI) and rapporteur for privacy and
personal data protection, participated in two
important activities within the framework of the
Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) that was held from
October 18 to 21 under the coordination of
Mexico’s National Institute of Transparency,
Access to Information and Protection of Personal
Data (INAI).
The GPA has established itself over four decades
as the main international forum attended by more
than 130 data protection and privacy
authorities, as well as experts from around the
world in order to build and maintain an
environment in which the authorities on these
issues can act effectively to fulfill their
mandates, both individually and in concert,
through the dissemination of knowledge and
supportive connections.
On Monday, October 18, Dr. Salazar participated
in the panel United Nations Agenda 2030:
Protection of Personal Data, moderated by INAI
Commissioner Adrián Alcalá. The rapporteur
referred to the Updated Principles on Privacy
and Personal Data Protection approved by the CJI
last April as a cross-cutting tool to contribute
to the achievement of the sustainable
development goals of the 2030 Agenda adopted
within the framework of the United Nations.
On Wednesday, October 20, the rapporteur
participated in the panel The Updated Principles
on Privacy and Protection of Personal Data of
the Organization of American States, organized
by Microsoft. In this session, in addition to
presenting the Updated Principles, Dr. Salazar
referred to the importance of achieving a
balance between the flow of personal data and
the effective protection thereof, and listened
to comments from co-panelists Isabel Davara,
partner at Davara Abogados, and Cristian
Fernández, Principal Corporate Counsel of
Microsoft Mexico, who offered a perspective from
private practice.
