2014 Competitiveness Forum Highlights Innovation

Competitiveness in the Region’s Spotlight in Trinidad and Tobago

Our perspective is that the human being must be at the center of Development, in order for development to be meaningful”, expressed the Minister of Planning and Sustainable Development of Trinidad and Tobago, Bhoendradatt Tewarie, during the opening ceremony of the VIII Americas Competitiveness Forum earlier this month. The Caribbean country hosted the VIII ACF in Port of Spain from October 8 -10, 2014 under the theme “The Human Imagination at Work: Driving Competitiveness, Powering Innovation.” OAS Secretary General, Jose Miguel Insulza, commended the government of Trinidad and Tobago for its selection of a theme that shifts the excessive focus placed on competitiveness rhetoric regarding economic issues, onto the role of the human being in the competitive process. » Read more

SEDI/CIM Combine Efforts to Address Gender Gap

OAS Member States discuss the Post-2015 Development Agenda

To champion the rights and equality of women, countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have enacted policies, created units within government, and in some cases even formed entire ministries of women’s affairs. However, much work remains to be done to truly mainstream a gender perspective in the design and implementation of public policy and programs. To this end, The OAS-SEDI Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN) developed a Participatory Gender Assessment (PGA) methodology in collaboration with the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) that was implemented in Uruguay, Guatemala and Paraguay between April and September of 2014.

The OAS-RIAL Supports Bilateral Cooperation Colombia-Peru

OAS Welcomes partners from the Mobiles for Education Alliance

The broad agenda of bilateral cooperation between Colombia and Peru is now being implemented through concrete actions. From October 21 to 23, representatives of Labor Ministries from both countries participated in a technical exchange mission in Bogota, facilitated by the OAS-SEDI Inter-American Network for Labor Administration (RIAL). A delegation from Peru visited the Ministry of Labor of Colombia to gain from its experience in the area of conflict prevention and resolution. Colombia established the Directorate for the Prevention and Solution of Labor Conflicts and Labor Corporate Social Responsibility in 2010, gaining a wealth of experience in a similar context to the neighboring country. » Read more

         

Sustainable Development and Education Critical to Post 2015 Goals

Cooperation in social protection: exchanging experiences, expanding opportunities

Countries partook of Education and Sustainable Development policy discussions earlier this month at OAS headquarters in preparation for Ministerial Meetings in 2015. Preparatory meetings were held amidst varying processes at the global, regional, and institutional levels, such as the UN definition of the Post-2015 development agenda, the strategic vision formulation of the OAS, and the revision of the Inter-American Program for Sustainable Development (PIDS). » Read more

Partners Align to fight Poverty through Innovation in Education

Cooperation in social protection: exchanging experiences, expanding opportunities

The 4th Annual Mobiles for Education Alliance International Symposium was held for a second consecutive year at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, October 20 to 22. A total of 200 partners from 70 institutions, including leading donor agencies, international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector gathered to exchange ideas on the possible applications of mobile technologies to improve education in developing countries. » Read more

         
 

Cooperation in Action

OAS - Caribbean Export Development Agency agree to support SMEs. Following a successful series of joint projects, both organizations signed an agreement to frame extensive collaboration in the Caribbean region on October 2. Preliminarily actions identified to advance common interests include developing an export strategy for higher education services, and a program to prepare technical advisors from Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) support institutions to assist MSME in enhancing their competitiveness and productivity through the use of ICTs in their business management process. » Read more

OAS - Trinidad and Tobago to promote clean production processes. The Organization will work with the Caribbean country to evaluate the design and development of biodegradable packaging of food, as a sustainable alternative to the use of Styrofoam, a material with harmful effects on health and the environment. Expected benefits include reduced waste, and a more sustainable food and beverage industries in Trinidad and Tobago. » Read more 

September 24-25, 2014

OAS-Argentina begin collaboration on the My School in Action project. The OAS-SEDI Inter-American Teacher Education Network (ITEN) and the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires began the joint project, which aims to build local capacity in secondary schools to implement community projects with students.
