COOPERATION IN ACTION

OAS-SEDI: Forging New Partnerships for Development

Washington, DC. July 3, 2013
The OAS-SEDI, through its Department of Sustainable Development joined the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) as a Knowledge Partner. The GGKP is a network of institutions that seek to identify and address major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice, and to help countries design and implement policies to move towards a green economy. It was founded by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank (WB). This mutually beneficial collaboration will foster a green growth community in the region and serve as an additional platform to highlight OAS programs, networks and clearinghouse mechanisms, such as the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), the Pathways to prosperity in the Americas and others.

The OAS-SEDI, through its Department of Economic and Social Development and Haiti’s Tourism Ministry signed a partnership agreement to promote the tourism sector as a vehicle for improving socioeconomic development in the country. The program will begin in September, 2013 and allocate US $220,000 to raising awareness through a communications and outreach campaign to promote internal and international tourism in Haiti. Local communities living around tourism sites will be involved as one of the program’s main stakeholders. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is a partner of the initiative and will provide technical support.

Guatemala City, July 15 - 26, 2013
OAS, ARTCA (Advanced Research and Technology Collaboratory for the Americas), the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala and the University of Illinois, with a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation, have joined forces to organize a summer session of the Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) and assembled an international group of experts and trainers to offer training to young researchers, graduate students and junior faculty whose research will benefit from Computation-Based Discovery (CBD) and the use of highly complex data sets to find solutions to major problems. The summer training session was held in Guatemala from July 15 to 26, 2013.

OAS and CONACYT Mexico sign an agreement to provide 600 scholarships for students in the Americas to pursue a master's or doctoral degree in science and engineering in Mexico. The scholarships program is supported jointly by OAS-SEDI’s Department of Economic and Social Development and the Department of Human Development, Education and Employment.

The call to submit success stories for the Report "Signs of Competitiveness in the Americas 2013" is open through http://www.riacreport.org/2013/. Member States and their institutions are invited to share successful experiences in infrastructure or in any of the areas associated with the 10 Competitiveness Principles. The report will be presented and distributed at the Annual Meeting of the RIAC and the VII Competitiveness Forum of the Americas "Infrastructure and Technology Shaping Countries Today" to be held from October 2 to 4, 2013 in Panama City.
